The Pinzgau Fence or the “Girschten” Fence

Category: Historic Fences in Leogang

The Pinzgau fence is probably the best known of the historic fences of our region - after all, it bears its name. It consists of particularly weather-resistant larch wood.

To produce the required sticks (“Girschten”), trunks are trimmed to about 2.70 to 2.80 m, split with a hoe and wedge and then quartered again. The trunk is split like a cake so that the resulting individual pieces are 4 - 6 cm wide on the outer edge but form a point towards the inside.
